HISTORY

Around the 10th and 11th centuries, Bali enjoyed a close relationship with its neighbor, Java.

Javanese kings were involved in power-struggling wars with each other over the entire archipelago, including Bali.

During this time, Balinese for the first time were highly affected by both Javanese cultural influences and Hinduism.

Even until this very day, the high language of Balinese, which can only be spoken by the highest caste, is the ancient Javanese language, named Kawi.
