RICE & AGRICULTURE

Bali has always been an extremely fertile island, able to fulfill its own need of food.

Definitely blessed by Nature, Bali’s volcanic soil, ample rainfall and mountain springs, as well as plentiful sunshine are the essential elements for wet-rice cultivation.

The rice cultivation system in Bali is very well developed, with subak as the organization that decides all aspects concerning the production of the rice within a given area.

As mentioned before, the subaks decide the time of rice planting, the harvesting time, and the varieties of paddy should be planted. Every Balinese who possesses a rice field (sawah) must join the subak in his area.
